The mission of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community. With over 30,000 members around the world, in schools, companies, and city chapters, we continue to be a cornerstone to sharpen like minds with shared cultural values, develop leaders within the community, and be a resource for companies to find incredible talent.

NSBE had its genesis at a national conference planned and hosted by the Society of Black Engineers at Purdue University in April 1975. From this meeting of concerned students and educators, NSBE was born. In 1976, NSBE became recognized as a non-profit organization and now has more than 790 chapters internationally. The NSBE New York City Professionals Chapter was formed in 1990 and has proudly supported area black technical professionals, engineers and students for 30 years.

The NSBE NYC Professionals Chapter is one the oldest professional chapters in the Northeastern Region One section of the
organization.  This chapter was founded in 1990, two years after the founding of the NSBE Alumni Extension, which was created to represent the increasingly growing number of experienced STEM talent from the society. Known today as the NSBE NYC Professionals, it is said that having attained a STEM degree opens the door to lifelong membership in this experienced and talented NSBE membership
segment.  These STEM practitioners seek to “inspire the next generation of technical professionals and serve as a catalyst for transforming the culture of engineering.” NSBE Professionals offers unmatched networking opportunities and career development training for its members, as well as countless opportunities to “reach back and give back” to future engineers and technologists and to underserved communities.

The NYC Professionals altogether support the goals and objectives of NSBE.  This is done by a firm dedication to develop intensive programs, to increase Black and minority participation in the field of engineering and engineering technology, and to develop a standard of
excellence among students, practicing engineers, and physical scientists by forming the National Society of Black Engineers Professionals.

The NYC Professionals’ close to thirty-five (35) years has made an indelible impact in Greater New York City boosting programs that have
impacted thousands of STEM students from Brooklyn Technical High School, Bronx Science, NYU Tandon School of Engineering, CCNY and many more.  Our ongoing community partnerships have been a hallmark of our mission to positively impact the community by partnerships with the Girl Scouts of Greater New York, Health Fairs across multicultural/religious groups, and with community
leaders.  Our chapter also continues long-standing partnerships with New York City based professional organizations as we partner to continue excellence in the greater NYC area.  Over the years, NSBE’s national executive board leaders have bestowed recognition to NYC Professionals as the National Chapter of the Year, Professional Development Programs of the Year and to-date hosted the first ever NSBE Annual Convention in New York City back in 1992!
