DESCRIPTION:Program Overview \n \nAs a volunteer\, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to inspire and mentor youth scholars as they design\, build\, and test their very own wooden structures. Volunteers play a crucial role in sparking curiosity and confidence in STEM—helping each child discover their potential to thrive in science\, technology\, engineering\, and math.\n  \nWhat does the day look like for a STEM Saturday volunteer?\n\n7:30am CHECK IN – Volunteers start the day by clocking in\, making a name tag\, and enjoying a light\, complimentary breakfast.\n\n8a – 8:30am GROUP TRAINING – Join fellow volunteers for a quick\, energizing training led by our program leaders. You’ll get a full rundown of the day\, learn more about STEM Global Action mission\, and feel fully prepped for success.\n\n8:30am ATTENDEE ARRIVAL – As students begin arriving\, volunteers should be stationed at their activity tables\, getting familiar with the setup and materials. Instructional guides will be provided\, and STEM Global Action staff will be on hand to support you.\n\n9a PROGRAM INTRODUCTION – Dr. Mackie will kick off the program with opening remarks before releasing the attendees to explore.\n\n9:30a – 12:30p ACTIVITY TIME – Time to lead your group of scholars as they dive into their building challenge. You’ll encourage creativity\, answer questions\, and cheer them on as they test their ideas. Our esteemed panelist will join us to discuss how they’ve paved the way in STEM for women of color to succeed. They include: \n\nDr.Tahira Reid-Smith – President of Jump Dream\, Inc – From her early days in the Bronx to becoming a Professor at Penn State University\, Dr. Reid Smith’s journey is a testament to the power of imagination and perseverance. Her groundbreaking automated double Dutch jump rope machine\, conceived from childhood sketches\, exemplifies how young dreams can transform into revolutionary innovations. As the leader of the REID Lab (Research in Engineering and Interdisciplinary Design) at Penn State\, she continues to push boundaries in mechanical engineering while inspiring the next generation of inventors.\nAisha Lawrey – STEM Ambassador – Aisha Lawrey\, has 20+ years of experience in STEM working in various industries including government\, nonprofits\, and education. While currently a lead specialist in the AWS Global Education Program\, her focus has always been on increasing the number of women and minorities represented in engineering. As the former Senior Director of Programs and Scholarships for the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME)\, Inc\, she was responsible for planning\, directing and executing all scholarships and program activities. Prior to joining NACME\, Aisha was the Director of Engineering Education with the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME). She directed and guided the work of ASME in helping to shape the future of mechanical engineering and engineering technology. Aisha obtained a Master of Public Administration and Policy from Rutgers University and a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. A New Jersey native\, Aisha now resides in Maryland with her husband and twins.\nDr.Denisha McPherson – PMI Certified Project Manager – Dr. Denisha McPherson is a highly accomplished Project Management Professional working for the State of New York with a deep-rooted passion for the intersection of Technology and Education. With an impressive background and extensive involvement in various organizations\, Denisha is a force to be reckoned with within her field.
